India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is set to receive its first aircraft delivery of the year, as the ATR 72-600, registered as VT-IRM, is en route to India. The aircraft, with Manufacturer Serial Number (MSN) 1685, successfully conducted its inaugural test flight on December 18, 2023.
IndiGo’s 44th ATR 72-600 aircraft out of the 50 it ordered in 2017. With only 6 more to go. The aircraft is on its way from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport in France as it takes off on January 3, 2024, at 08:56 UTC. Its route to New Delhi includes planned technical stops at Cairo International Airport in Egypt and Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi. This strategic routing ensures a smooth and efficient delivery process for state-of-the-art aircraft.
IndiGo’s strategic acquisition of these aircraft is aligned with its ambitious plans for the development of its regional footprint. This move coincides with the launch of the Indian Government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme, known as UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik), aimed at enhancing economic development, employment, and tourism by connecting smaller and remote cities across the country.
The ATR 72-600 boasts impressive specifications, with a passenger capacity ranging from 68 to 78 seats. Powered by Pratt & Whitney 127M engines, each generating a maximum take-off power of 2,750 horsepower, the aircraft can handle a maximum take-off weight of 23,000 kg. Its maximum load capacity is 7,500 kg, and it offers a commendable maximum range of 900 nautical miles (1,665 km) with a full passenger load.
One of the notable features of ATR aircraft is their environmental efficiency, as they consume up to 45% less fuel and emit 45% less CO2 per trip compared to regional jets. This aligns well with the global push towards sustainable aviation practices.
IndiGo’s commitment to expanding its regional network, combined with the fuel efficiency and environmental benefits of the ATR 72-600, positions the airline at the forefront of India’s aviation sector.
