Chennai Airport’s secondary runway resurfacing work is nearing completion after nearly a decade since its last renovation. The resurfacing project, initiated in early 2021, aimed to remove accumulated rubber deposits and ensure safer landings for aircraft. With just two more months remaining, the secondary runway will soon be fully operational.
Chennai Airport boasts two runways, with the primary runway measuring 12,000 ft and the secondary runway spanning 9,000 ft in length. The resurfacing work on the secondary runway was deemed crucial to maintain optimal safety standards and facilitate smooth landings.
In other news, the recently unveiled integrated terminal building (T-2) at Chennai Airport has witnessed a surge in activity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, inaugurated the state-of-the-art terminal in April this year.
The terminal has become increasingly bustling as major international airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Gulf Airlines, Air Arabia, Fly Dubai, Air France, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Air Asia, Jazeera, MAI and others have shifted their operations to T-2.
As a result of this expansion, the Chennai Airport Authority has made an important announcement regarding terminal allocations. The current domestic terminal at Chennai Airport will be exclusively used by Indigo, SpiceJet, and other low-cost carriers (LCCs). On the other hand, the current international terminal will be dedicated exclusively to Vistara, Air India, and Alliance Air.
These developments at Chennai Airport signify significant progress in enhancing airport infrastructure, improving safety measures, and streamlining operations for the convenience of passengers and airlines alike.
