In a startling revelation, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced on Wednesday that the number of violations by airlines soared by 77% during the calendar year 2023. Various prominent carriers such as Air India, AirAsia, IndiGo, and SpiceJet faced substantial financial penalties, with a total of Rs 2.75 crore imposed in fines over the course of the year.
One of the most significant actions taken by DGCA was the suspension of licenses for Simulator Training Facilities belonging to Air India. The regulatory body disclosed that it had dealt with 542 cases in 2023, a sharp increase from the 305 cases addressed in the previous year.
In its pursuit of ensuring safety standards within the aviation sector, DGCA suspended the license of Redbird Aviation Academy as part of its stringent measures. This move comes as part of an intensified safety oversight effort by the aviation regulator.
Throughout the year, DGCA conducted a total of 5,475 surveillances, highlighting a proactive approach to monitoring and rectifying safety violations. Among these, 4,039 were planned surveillance, while 1,076 were spot checks and night surveillance, demonstrating the regulator’s commitment to addressing potential risks promptly.
“The surge in violations necessitated robust actions to maintain and enhance safety standards within the aviation industry,” stated the DGCA. The regulator emphasized the critical role of extensive surveillance mechanisms in identifying and mitigating safety risks, contributing to an overall improvement in safety margins across the industry.
The aviation industry, being inherently safety-sensitive, relies heavily on regulatory bodies like DGCA to enforce and uphold stringent standards. The surge in violations during 2023 has prompted the regulator to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and the aviation workforce. As the industry navigates through these challenges, stakeholders are closely watching the efforts undertaken by DGCA to establish a safer and more secure aviation environment in the years to come.
India’s aviation sector continues to soar, being the world’s third-largest and fastest-growing civil aviation market, registering almost 10% growth over the last decade. The number of aircraft has surged from around 400 in 2014 to 723 in 2023, and international passengers have witnessed a remarkable increase from 43 million to 64 million, representing a nearly 50% upswing. India’s aviation landscape is poised for continued growth and prominence on the global stage.
