IndiGo, announced on Monday that its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pieter Elbers will step down from his role with immediate effect, marking a significant leadership transition at the country’s dominant low-cost carrier.

The announcement was made through an official statement issued by parent company InterGlobe Aviation Limited on March 10, 2026.

According to the statement, the airline’s board accepted Elbers’ decision to step down and expressed gratitude for his leadership and contributions to the organisation. The board said his tenure helped strengthen IndiGo’s position in a rapidly expanding aviation market.

“Pieter has contributed significantly to the airline during his time with us, and we thank him for his service to the company,” the statement noted, adding that the board wishes him well in his future endeavours.

Rahul Bhatia to Take Interim Charge

Following Elbers’ departure, Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, will assume responsibility for overseeing the airline’s affairs on an interim basis until a new chief executive is appointed.

The company indicated that the search for a new CEO is expected to conclude in the near future.

The transition effectively brings Bhatia back into a more direct leadership role at the airline he helped establish more than two decades ago. IndiGo has grown from a small domestic carrier into India’s largest airline by market share during that period.

Commenting on the development, the airline’s Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said the interim leadership arrangement would reinforce the airline’s commitment to operational excellence and customer service.

“Rahul returns to assume management of the affairs of the airline to strengthen the company’s culture, reinforce operational excellence, and deepen its commitment to delivering exceptional service defined by care, reliability, and professionalism,” Mehta said.

A Strategic Moment for the Airline

Bhatia, reflecting on the transition, emphasised his long-standing connection with the airline and his sense of responsibility toward its stakeholders.

“Having founded and nurtured IndiGo for twenty-two years, I feel a deep sense of personal commitment and responsibility towards our nation and towards the airline’s customers, employees, shareholders and all other stakeholders,” Bhatia said in the statement.

He added that the airline would continue to prioritise its core values, including culture, service excellence and stakeholder trust, while maintaining a strong focus on operational reliability.

Bhatia also highlighted IndiGo’s broader ambition to remain a globally respected airline while continuing to serve India’s rapidly growing aviation market.

IndiGo’s Market Leadership

The leadership change comes at a time when IndiGo continues to dominate India’s aviation sector and expand its international footprint.

The airline currently operates a fleet of more than 400 aircraft and runs over 2,200 daily flights. Its network connects more than 95 domestic destinations and over 40 international cities.

In the financial year ending 2025, the carrier transported approximately 124 million passengers, reinforcing its position as India’s preferred airline.

IndiGo has also received multiple industry recognitions in recent years. It was named “Best Airline in India and South Asia” at the 2025 Skytrax World Airline Awards and ranked the sixth most punctual airline in the Asia-Pacific region in 2025 by aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Looking Ahead

While the airline has not disclosed details about the process or timeline for appointing a permanent successor to Elbers, industry observers will closely watch the leadership transition given IndiGo’s central role in India’s aviation growth story.

The airline has been steadily expanding its international routes, inducting new aircraft types, and strengthening its operational scale. Leadership stability will be crucial as the carrier continues to navigate competition, fleet expansion and evolving passenger demand in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

For now, Rahul Bhatia’s interim stewardship signals continuity as the airline prepares for its next phase of leadership and growth.
