Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, informed the Lok Sabha that India’s aircraft fleet has experienced a remarkable surge, growing from 400 in 2014 to an impressive 644 in the current year.
Minister Scindia highlighted the rapid expansion, stating that the Indian Civil Aviation sector has witnessed substantial growth in the last few years.
“The number of Aircraft on Ground roughly stands at 140 from the point of view of the scheduled commercial airlines. 95% of the aircrafts on ground today in India today are in their current position due to engine supplier Pratt and Whitney facing supply chain issues”
Expressing concern over the situation, Minister Scindia emphasized that the government is actively engaged with Pratt and Whitney to resolve the supply chain issues promptly.
“We have been in direct touch with Pratt and Whitney and conveyed them that this situation is unacceptable, because air traffic in India is growing exponentially”.
The Minister further shared positive news about the continuous expansion of the fleet. He revealed that the fleet has grown from 626 last year to 644, and projections indicate that by March 2024, the number will further increase to 686. The induction of approximately 2 to 5 aircraft per month contributes to this upward trajectory.
As India continues to position itself as a global aviation hub, Minister Scindia assured the Lok Sabha that the government is committed to addressing challenges and ensuring the sustained growth and efficiency of the aviation sector.
