In a significant stride towards promoting sustainability, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) made a groundbreaking announcement on Monday. The airport, along with its entire ecosystem, has successfully transitioned to being fully powered by green energy.
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, which was inaugurated in 2008, is set to significantly reduce its carbon footprint by an estimated 9,300 tons of carbon dioxide each year, as stated by GHIAL. Spanning across an extensive area of 675 acres, the airport serves as a natural carbon emissions sink, absorbing approximately 240 tons of carbon dioxide annually from the environment.
This remarkable achievement has been made possible through a collaborative effort between GHIAL and the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL).
GHIAL envisions that this move will revolutionize the airport’s operations by harnessing the potent force of green energy. The airport’s own 10 MWp (megawatt peak) solar power plant, combined with the supply of green energy from TSSPDCL, will be the key driving forces behind this transformation.
GHIAL’s commendable accomplishment is expected to inspire other airports to explore greener alternatives and embark on a path towards environmental stewardship. With its dedication to sustainability, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has set a remarkable precedent for others to follow in the quest for a greener future.
