Biman Bangladesh Airlines marked its foray into the south Indian city of Chennai, aiming to cater to the growing demand for medical services among Bangladeshi citizens. The inaugural flight, operated by a Boeing 737, took off from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at 12:50 pm local time on Saturday.
Carrying 161 passengers, the flight landed at Chennai International Airport in India at 3:20 pm local time. Biman Bangladesh Airlines plans to operate three weekly flights on this route, departing from Dhaka at 12:50 pm local time on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. The return flights from Chennai will depart at 4:15 pm local time, arriving in Dhaka at 7:30 pm local time.
During the inaugural ceremony of the Dhaka to Chennai service, Shafiul Azim, the Managing Director and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, expressed the airline’s commitment to expanding its services further in India. He disclosed plans to add flights to additional destinations in the country, citing Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Guwahati as potential locations.
Presently, Biman’s network in India includes Delhi, Kolkata, and now Chennai. The airline aims to tap into emerging opportunities in these markets, particularly in response to the growing demand for medical services from Bangladeshi travelers.
The airline currently boasts a fleet of 21 aircraft, comprising four Boeing 777-300 ER, four Boeing 787-8, two Boeing 787-9, six Boeing 737, and five Dash 8-400 aircraft.
