In a bid to enhance passenger experience and streamline airport operations, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced plans to introduce the DigiYatra facility at Chennai and Bhubaneswar airports by 2024. DigiYatra, a digital initiative, aims to provide travelers with hassle-free and paperless access through various checkpoints, eliminating the need for physical documents such as boarding passes and IDs.
The implementation of DigiYatra is slated to commence at the new international terminal in Chennai initially, with subsequent extension to the two domestic terminals. Chennai airport, handling a substantial 16,000 to 20,000 international passengers daily, will serve as a pivotal location for the introduction of this advanced passenger facilitation system.
The move comes as part of the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s broader efforts to alleviate congestion and enhance operational efficiency at airports nationwide, including Bhubaneswar Airport.
Currently operational at 13 airports across India, the DigiYatra facility is poised for expansion, with the government aiming to increase the number of airports offering this service to 38 by the end of 2024.
Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, outlined the ambitious plan, stating,
“In the calendar year 2024, first, we are going to take up 14 airports that would be added to DigiYatra and 11 more airports in the second phase, taking the total to 38 airports by the end of 2024.”
One of the key benefits of DigiYatra is the reduction of human intervention in the passenger verification process, leading to minimal queuing time and enhanced security measures. Travelers using this digital platform can look forward to a more efficient and seamless journey, marking a significant step toward modernizing airport operations in India.
