In recent days, there have been circulating media reports suggesting that Chennai Airport may face challenges in accommodating long-haul widebody international flights due to purported shortages of aerobridges and other operational constraints. However, airport authorities are quick to dismiss these claims, asserting that such reports lack factual accuracy.

Contrary to the speculative reports, the Chennai Airport terminal complex boasts a significant number of aerobridges, totaling 13 in current operation. Additionally, to address any potential limitations, construction is underway for an additional aerobridge specifically designed for Code E aircraft, scheduled to be operational by March 2024.

Of the existing 13 aerobridges, 5 are already equipped to cater to Code E aircraft, such as the A350 and B777, which are commonly used for long-haul international flights. Moreover, expansion plans are in motion, with the second phase of Terminal 2 set for completion in 2025. Upon its inauguration, an additional 3 aerobridges capable of servicing Code E aircraft will be made available.

Looking forward, post-2025, Chennai Airport will boast a total of 9 aerobridges ready to accommodate Code E aircraft for international operations, ensuring smoother transitions for passengers and efficient handling of long-haul flights.

Addressing specific concerns raised about the Airbus A380, a flagship of Code F aircraft, it’s important to note that production of this aircraft type ceased in 2021. Instead, the industry is witnessing a shift towards next-generation wide-bodied long-haul aircraft like the A350 and B777, both of which fall under the Code E category. Importantly, Chennai Airport is fully equipped to handle these modern aircraft, reaffirming its readiness to serve as a hub for international travel well into the future.

As the aviation landscape evolves, Chennai Airport remains committed to enhancing its infrastructure to meet the growing demands of air travel, ensuring a seamless experience for passengers and airlines alike.
